What the job involves

A workshop that takes one model works differently from one that takes everything, and that is the whole reason this branch exists.

We see the same engine, the same gearbox and the same suspension every day, so the first hour is spent confirming a fault rather than working out what the car is. A Y62 that arrives with a shudder gets checked against every other Y62 that has arrived with a shudder, which is a different starting point from a general garage seeing its first one this month.

Message before you come in. Send what the car is doing, when it started and the mileage, and a short video with the sound if there is a noise. We will tell you what we would check first and whether this is likely to be a same-day job or a car that needs to stay with us. That is not us being precious about appointments: it is one model, so the diagnostic time and the lift are booked against a specific car rather than left open, and the parts worth having ready can be checked before you arrive rather than after.

How soon does it need looking at?

If you are weighing up whether to book it in now or leave it until the next service, this is roughly how we look at it:

• Next service will doThe car drives normally and nothing has changed. Send the mileage and the service history and we will tell you what is genuinely due, which is often less than a fixed schedule implies.
• Book it in this monthA noise, a shudder, a slow AC or a light that comes and goes. Nothing is stranded, but every one of those is cheaper to diagnose early than after another few thousand kilometres of driving on it.
• Book it in this weekGearbox slipping or shifting badly, temperature climbing in traffic, or a fault that has changed how the car behaves in the last few days. These do not settle down on their own, and each of them has a cheap version and an expensive version depending on how long it runs.
• Do not drive it, message usTemperature in the red, a burnt smell from any fluid, or a car that will not hold a gear. Tell us where it is before you move it. Driving a Y62 in that state to reach a workshop, even a close one, is how a cooling repair turns into an engine repair.

Booking it in

Send the mileage, what the car is doing and roughly when it started. We will come back with what we would check first and a slot at the Mussafah workshop. If we think the fault needs the car for more than a day, or is better done at Ras Al Khor, we will say so up front rather than once it is already on a lift.
