Quick answer: A stored code tells us which circuit complained, not what failed. We scan every module rather than the engine ECU alone, then drive the car and put it on the lift, because a single misfire code can be coils, injectors or a vacuum leak and those look nothing alike under load. Send the code if you have it and we will tell you what it usually turns out to be.
What the job involves
The scan is the start of the job, not the answer. Reading a code takes a minute. Working out which part on that circuit actually failed is the work you are paying for, and it is why we road test before quoting anything.
We read stored and pending faults across the modules, not just the engine. On a Y62 that means the transmission control module, the ABS and stability system, the transfer case controller for the ALL MODE 4x4, and the HBMC controller where it is fitted. A fault in one of those can produce a symptom that looks like it belongs to another. A misfire that turns out to be mechanical rather than electrical becomes VK56VD engine work.
Then live data. Fuel trims on both banks of the VK56VD, transmission fluid temperature, lock-up behaviour, wheel speed sensor deltas. Lock-up slip that shows here is usually where Y62 gearbox repair starts. A sensor drifting slowly out of range often produces a driveable car and a vague complaint, and it only shows up when you watch the values move.
Last is the physical check on the lift. Connectors, looms at the firewall and along the chassis rails, and anything the data pointed at. Salt humidity and vibration crack insulation at bracket points, and an intermittent fault that will not reproduce on a scan tool often shows itself here.
What we check first
The sequence is the same on every car, because it rules things out fastest:
- Stored and pending codes across every module, with freeze frame data where it exists
- Whether a code is currently active or a historical event that has since cleared
- Live values under load, not just at idle, since some faults only appear when the car is working
- A road test that reproduces the owner's description rather than a generic loop
- Wiring, connectors and grounds at the points where heat and vibration do the damage
- Battery and charging behaviour under starter load, which can mimic a long list of other faults
How bad is it? A symptom ladder
Owners often ask whether a light means stop driving. Roughly, this is how we grade it:
- Watch itA light that appeared once, cleared itself, and the car drives normally. Worth scanning at the next service so the stored event is not lost.
- Book it inA steady warning light with no change in how the car drives. The code is telling you something has already happened at least once.
- Book it in soonA light that returns immediately after a reset, or a light that arrived at the same time as a change in shift quality, noise or fuel consumption.
- Stop drivingA flashing engine light, the car in a reduced-function mode, or a warning arriving with smoke, a burning smell or loss of drive.
Booking it in
Send us the model year, the mileage and the exact wording on the dash, plus what the car was doing when the light appeared. If your scanner has already given you a code, send that too. It saves time and it tells us where to start.

Frequently asked questions
Can a generic OBD2 reader tell me the same thing?
Only partly. A generic reader sees the engine ECU and the codes that meet the universal OBDII standard. It cannot read the transmission, transfer case, HBMC or ABS modules on a Y62, and it cannot show the live data channels that reveal a sensor drifting rather than failing outright.
The light went off by itself. Do I still need a scan?
Yes, if it has happened more than once. A light that clears still leaves a stored event in the module. Reading that history is how an intermittent fault gets identified before it becomes a consistent one.
Do you clear codes without fixing anything?
No. Clearing a code removes the evidence and the fault returns. We read it, diagnose it, and tell you what it means. If the honest answer is that nothing needs doing yet, that is what you will hear.
What do you need from me before I bring the car?
The model year, the mileage, the wording on the dash, and when the symptom happens. Cold start, once warm, only in traffic, only under load. That detail narrows the diagnosis before the car arrives.
