Quick answer: Pressure test first, then find out where the heat is actually going. A Y62 that runs warm in traffic and fine on the motorway is usually airflow or a fan, not a head gasket, and the two get confused often enough to be worth separating properly. What the job involves
Heat has a route. Before anything is replaced we establish three things in order: whether the engine is losing coolant, whether the coolant is moving, and whether the radiator can hand its heat over to the air. Nearly every overheating complaint on a Y62 resolves to one of those three, and they are cheap to tell apart.
Losing coolant comes first, because it is the one that damages the engine fastest. The cold system goes on a hand pump and we watch the gauge for a drop rather than hunting for a puddle underneath. A slow loss shows on the gauge long before it marks the floor. The header tank seams, the hose unions, the radiator end tanks and the water pump weep hole are where a Y62 usually gives it up. The pressure cap is rated and tested at the same time — a cap venting early drops the boiling point of the entire system and produces an overheat with nothing actually broken.
Movement is next. Once the thermostat has opened we compare top and bottom hose temperature: a healthy core shows a clear drop across it, and a lazy one does not. A thermostat stuck part-open runs cool around town and then spikes under sustained load, which is why a car can pass a short test drive and still overheat on the Al Ain road. On higher-mileage cars we also look at the water pump impeller, which can erode or slip on its shaft and circulate far less than the pump sounds like it is.
Handing the heat over is last, and it is where this climate does its damage. A radiator core packs solid with fine sand from the front, and the fan is the only thing pulling air through it once the car is stationary. The air conditioning condenser sits in the same stack and loses its airflow the same way. We clean a blocked core and re-test rather than bill it as a repair. If all three checks come back clean and the engine still runs hot, a combustion gas test on the coolant tells us whether exhaust gas is getting into the circuit — which rules a head gasket in or out before anybody quotes for one.
What we check first
This is the order we work in, because each step rules out a whole branch of causes before the next one starts:
- Coolant level in the header tank, and whether it has needed topping up between services — that is a leak until proven otherwise
- A cold pressure test on the hand pump, watching the gauge for a drop rather than looking for a puddle
- The pressure cap rating and its seal, since a cap that vents early lowers the boiling point of the whole system
- Coolant condition, and whether anything has been put in that does not belong there
- Top-to-bottom hose temperature drop once the thermostat has opened, which shows whether the core is really working
- Water pump shaft play, the weep hole, and on higher-mileage cars the state of the impeller itself
- Radiator core packed with sand from the front, which we clean and re-test rather than bill as a repair
- Fan behaviour as coolant temperature climbs, since a fan that never commands high speed looks identical to a blocked core
- A combustion gas test on the coolant, which rules a head gasket in or out before anyone quotes for one
How bad is it? A symptom ladder
Overheating is the one complaint where the gap between watch it and stop driving is measured in minutes, so it is worth being clear:
- Watch itTemperature sitting slightly higher than it used to in summer traffic, settling back to normal once moving, with coolant at the right level.
- Book it inNeeding to top the coolant up between services. That is a leak, even if you cannot see one, and it is cheapest to find while it is still small.
- Book it in soonHot in traffic but settled on an open road, or a fan you can no longer hear cutting in. That is the stage before a real overheat, and it is still a cheap fix at this point.
- Stop drivingThe needle going into the red, steam, or a sweet smell from the engine bay. Continuing to drive an overheating VK56VD risks turning a cooling repair into an engine repair. Pull over and let it cool.

Send the model year and mileage, and say when the gauge climbs — crawling in traffic, on a long run at speed, towing, or working in sand. Each of those points at a different part of the circuit, and it decides whether we start at the cap and the coolant or at the fan and the core.
Frequently asked questions
My Y62 runs warm in traffic but is fine on the motorway. What is that?
Almost always the radiator core or the fan, and it is one of the few overheating patterns that points somewhere cheap. Moving, the car forces air through the core and the fan barely matters. Stationary, the fan is the only thing pulling air, so a core packed with sand or a fan that never commands high speed only reveals itself once you stop.
Does an overheat always mean the head gasket has gone?
No, and assuming it does is how people pay for the wrong job. A gasket failure sits at the expensive end of a long list. A combustion gas test on the coolant answers the question directly in a few minutes — if there is no exhaust gas in the circuit, the head is not the problem and we go back to the cap, the pump and the core.
How often should the coolant be changed here?
Sooner than a temperate-climate schedule assumes. Coolant degrades faster when it spends its life at high ambient temperature, and degraded coolant stops protecting the internals long before it stops circulating. We check its condition at every service rather than going by the interval alone.
Is it safe to keep driving if the temperature is only slightly high?
Slightly high and stable, with coolant at the right level, is worth getting looked at rather than panicking about. A needle that keeps climbing is different. Aluminium heads do not tolerate a real overheat, and the difference between a cooling repair and an engine repair can be a few minutes of driving.
