It is the gap between what the service schedule assumes and what the car actually lives through: summer ambient temperatures touching 45 to 50 degrees Celsius, sand and dust loading the filters and the condenser stack, stop-start traffic on Sheikh Zayed Road and Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road keeping the engine hot at low airflow, and weekend dune runs putting sustained torque through the driveline in exactly the conditions where fluid temperature spikes hardest. A major service done on the book interval in those conditions is not the same job as one done on a schedule that reflects how the car is actually used. The difference shows up in fluid colour, filter condition, and eventually in how the car drives. What does a Y62 major service actually include?
A major service on the Y62 goes further than an oil change and filter swap. The full scope covers the engine oil and filter, all four spark plugs (sixteen on the VK56VD, which is a V8 with two plugs per cylinder), air and cabin filters, gearbox fluid and filter, front and rear differential fluid, transfer case fluid, engine coolant, and brake fluid. On top of those fluid and filter changes, a full inspection covers the braking system, steering components, suspension geometry, tyre wear and rotation, and a scan of the engine and transmission control modules for stored fault codes. The inspection matters as much as the fluid changes. Fluid condition tells you what has been happening inside the drivetrain; the scan and the inspection tell you what is coming.
Cars running the Hydraulic Body Motion Control (HBMC) suspension get an additional check of the hydraulic fluid level and the condition of the HBMC lines and actuators. That system sits low on the car and takes road debris and sand directly, so condition varies a lot depending on how often the car has been driven off-road and how aggressively.
Fluid intervals in this climate: why the book figure is not the right number
The manufacturer's service interval is written for a global market. In the UAE that figure is a starting point, not a target. Engine oil ages faster under sustained heat than it does under moderate temperatures, and the VK56VD runs hot in slow traffic. The JR710E gearbox is a sealed unit with no dipstick, so most owners have no visibility on fluid condition between services. That is exactly why checking it at every major service matters: dark fluid with a burnt smell means it has been running hot for a while, and that smell is the earliest warning the gearbox gives before it starts generating fault codes or slipping under load. Differential and transfer case fluid intervals are the ones we adjust most often for owners who run off-road. Low-range work in soft sand, whether at Al Qudra, Big Red, or Liwa, puts sustained load through the driveline at low road speed and low airflow. Fluid temperature climbs fast in those conditions. We set the interval from what the car actually does, not from the calendar.
Check the fluid before anything else
When a Y62 comes in for a major service, the first thing we look at is what the fluids are telling us. Engine oil on the dipstick, gearbox fluid colour and smell, coolant condition, and brake fluid moisture content. These are not tick-box checks. They tell us whether the car is on the right schedule, whether it has been running harder than the last service assumed, and whether anything needs attention beyond the standard major service scope.
Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, and that process accelerates in the coastal humidity common across Dubai. High moisture content in the brake fluid lowers its boiling point, which becomes relevant in exactly the situations where you need the brakes most. We check this with a moisture meter rather than going by time or distance alone. Similarly, coolant condition determines whether the system is protecting the radiator and the engine block the way it should, or whether it has acidified to the point where it is doing more harm than good.
The order here is intentional. Fluid condition shapes what comes next. A car with clean fluids across the board on a documented service history needs less intervention than one with dark gearbox fluid and moisture-heavy brake fluid showing up at the same time. Both cars may be at the same mileage. The fluids tell us which situation we are actually dealing with.
What the spark plugs and air filters show
The VK56VD takes sixteen spark plugs, two per cylinder. At a major service interval those plugs are due for replacement regardless of apparent condition, because the degradation in spark quality is gradual and does not always show up as a misfire until the plug is already well past its useful life. A plug that looks acceptable on visual inspection can still be causing incomplete combustion under load, which shows up as a slight loss in power and an increase in fuel consumption that is easy to attribute to other causes.
The air filter is the other item that loads faster in this environment than anywhere else. Fine desert sand gets through in conditions where coarser dust would not, and a restricted air filter robs the VK56VD of the airflow it needs at the same time as it increases the chance of abrasive particles reaching the intake. The cabin filter follows the same logic. Both get replaced at a major service as a matter of course. If the car has been through a dust storm or a long off-road run since the last service, we may find the filter well beyond its normal condition for the mileage.
The gearbox inspection during a major service
The JR710E is the component that most benefits from the extra attention a major service provides. It has no owner-accessible dipstick, so its condition is invisible between service visits. At a major service we access the fluid, check its colour and smell, and change it along with the filter, pan, and gasket. Clean, amber-coloured fluid indicates a gearbox that has been serviced on a sensible schedule. Dark fluid with a burnt smell indicates a unit that has been running hot, possibly for a long time.
At higher mileage, fluid that has been changed late sometimes reveals a gearbox that has already started generating codes or showing intermittent shift behaviour. That is why we run a scan after the fluid change rather than before: the new fluid may clear a soft code, but if the underlying issue is a worn solenoid or a valve body that has been running in degraded fluid for extended periods, the code will return and we can address it with a clearer picture of what is actually at fault. The fluid change is not a repair. It is the first diagnostic step.
What the inspection covers beyond the fluids
Once the fluids are done, the car goes up on the ramp and we work through the mechanical systems. Brake pad thickness and disc condition front and rear. Caliper operation, particularly the rear calipers, which have an integrated handbrake mechanism that seizes in vehicles that spend most of their time in automatic park. Steering components for play and wear, especially on cars that have done regular off-road work. Suspension bushings and ball joints, which take a beating on corrugated tracks and absorb a lot of the energy that would otherwise translate into chassis flex. Tyre condition and rotation, and a wheel alignment check.
The scan covers both the engine control module and the transmission control module. A stored code on either is the starting point for a separate conversation, not something to clear and ignore. If the scan comes back clean and the fluids and inspection are in order, the car leaves with a clear picture of where it actually stands, not just a set of fresh fluids and a stamp in the book.

The JR710E does not announce fluid degradation through obvious symptoms until it is already in trouble. Skipping the fluid because the car feels normal is exactly how gearbox repairs become necessary. The fluid change at a major service is what prevents that conversation.
