Valve stem seals are the most common mechanical cause. When they harden or crack, oil migrates down the valve stems into the combustion chamber and burns there. That behaviour, cold-start smoke that settles once the engine is at temperature, is a reasonably reliable sign that the seals are the issue rather than the rings.
Piston ring wear produces a different pattern. Consumption tends to be more consistent across all operating conditions rather than concentrated at start-up, and the smoke, when it appears, is more persistent. High-mileage engines with a history of extended oil change intervals are more likely to develop ring issues, because oil that has broken down and run dirty accelerates wear on the ring lands over time.
External leaks are worth checking first before assuming an internal cause. Check the oil level before you do anything else

Also look at the oil on the dipstick itself. Clean amber oil is fine. Dark oil that looks almost black and smells slightly burnt has been running hot for a while and is breaking down. Milky or creamy oil is a different problem entirely: that's coolant contamination, and the car should not be driven until the source is found.
In UAE summer conditions, oil degrades from heat as well as distance. A car that has covered its kilometres through months of heavy summer traffic may have oil that is effectively exhausted before the service interval is up on the clock. That's why we set service intervals from how the car has actually been used, not from the printed figure alone.
What smoke colour tells you
Blue or blue-grey smoke means oil is burning. White smoke means coolant. Black smoke means the fuel mixture is running rich, which is a separate conversation.
For oil consumption specifically, blue smoke on a cold start that clears as the engine warms up points toward valve stem seals. Persistent blue smoke that follows the car through its operating range, particularly under load, points toward rings. If you're seeing smoke and the level is dropping quickly, the two things are connected. The oil is going somewhere and you can see where.
Not all high consumption produces visible smoke. If the engine is burning oil slowly and the combustion chamber temperatures are high enough, it can clear the residue without producing a visible plume at the exhaust. In those cases, the dropping dipstick is the main indicator, and the exhaust pipe may show oily deposits on the inside rim if you look closely.
The role of service intervals in keeping consumption under control
Skipping or extending oil changes does not just leave dirty oil in the engine: it accelerates the wear that makes consumption worse over time.
In Dubai, the practical engine oil change interval for a Y62 is 5,000 to 7,500 km, rather than the 10,000 km in the owner's manual. That number is written once for every market the car sells into, and this is not a typical one. Oil that has been through enough heat cycles breaks down chemically: its viscosity drops, its additives are depleted, and its ability to maintain a protective film on metal surfaces falls off. Running on degraded oil means the piston rings, valve stems, and cylinder walls are experiencing more friction and more wear than they should. That wear is cumulative. A car that has run consistently on short intervals and clean oil will have measurably less ring and seal wear at high mileage than one that has been on stretched intervals, and that directly affects how much oil the engine passes between services.

Valve stem seals can be replaced without removing the engine. It is not a quick job on the VK56VD because the cylinder heads need to come off, but it is well within the scope of routine workshop work and it addresses the problem at the source. What drives the extent of the job is whether the seals alone are the issue, or whether the head needs attention while it's off. That's something we assess once the engine is open.
Piston ring replacement is a more significant job. It involves removing and partially disassembling the engine, and the decision to do it usually comes after confirming that the rings are genuinely the cause and that the rest of the engine is worth the investment.
