What the job involves

Suspension diagnosis on a Y62 is done with the wheels off and a hand on every joint. A noise heard from the driver's seat travels, and the component making it is rarely the one you would guess from inside the car.

We check bushes, ball joints, drop links and mounts individually for play, and look at the dampers for signs they are weeping rather than simply worn. Then the geometry, because a car that has been used hard in sand often has alignment that has moved and is wearing tyres unevenly as a result.

On cars fitted with Hydraulic Body Motion Control, the system is tested as a circuit before any part is condemned. HBMC uses hydraulic fluid to link the corners and reduce body roll, and a slow accumulator, a weak pump and a tired damper can all produce the same complaint about how the car feels over a bump.

That distinction matters, which is why we test rather than assume. Replacing a damper on a car whose real problem is hydraulic fixes nothing.

What we check first

With the wheels off, this is the order we work through:

• Every bush, ball joint, drop link and mount checked by hand for play
• Dampers inspected for weeping and for whether they are still controlling the spring
• On HBMC cars, the hydraulic circuit and fluid condition tested before any part is replaced
• Ride height across the four corners, which shows a settled spring or a hydraulic problem
• Tyre wear pattern, because uneven wear points at geometry rather than a failed part
• Whether the car regularly runs in soft sand, which changes how quickly bushes and seals wear

How bad is it? A symptom ladder

Suspension complaints usually arrive as a noise. This is how we grade what owners describe:

• Watch itA faint creak over speed bumps at low speed, with no change in how the car sits or steers.
• Book it inA knock over bumps that has appeared recently, a change in ride height at one corner, or uneven tyre wear.
• Book it in soonA damper visibly weeping, a clunk you can feel through the seat, or an HBMC warning. On HBMC cars a slow accumulator makes the pump work harder the longer it is left.
• Stop drivingVague or wandering steering, a corner that has dropped noticeably, or a bang from the suspension under normal road use.

Booking it in

Tell us the model year, the mileage, whether the car has HBMC, and what it does. Over bumps, under braking, on turn-in, at speed. If the noise happens somewhere specific, say where. We will tell you what we would check first.
